In Congressional hearings and in civil and criminal cases filed by the Attorneys General in a number of states, charges have been made that American tobacco companies were not truthful in the statements they made about the addictive properties of nicotine. They were also charged with lying about their marketing strategies, especially in terms of targeting young people with advertising campaigns. The most notable judicial action was a 6.6 billion dollar settlement the tobacco companies made in May, 1998, with the State of Minnesota.
